Shahid Kapoor Opens Up About Emotional Struggles: 'I Was Destroying Myself

Shahid, who had a long-term relationship with actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, opened out to Faye D'Souza on her YouTube channel about 'weeping' at work due to 'heartbreak'. It is rare to see him open up about his personal life.

In the interview, he talked about the highs and lows of his personal and professional life. He was asked if he had ever wept in a room alone because of his career. To which he answered, “That only happened to me when I went through heartbreak. And, sometimes it happens when you are making movies. So, I have had that. It was really bad. My makeup guy was like, ‘I just finished your makeup! Can you just not?'”

He explained to him, “‘I can’t help it; I think I am destroying myself.’ I have been through those but not for work.”

“Indian men, especially, have been kind of told from a very young age that you have to be the provider, that you have to protect and be the man of the family. It's there in men when you are always worried that whatever I love, I must protect it. Sometimes, it can put a lot of pressure on you. Sometimes, you just want to relax and be like, ‘I don’t have to keep worrying about everything and everybody all the time and I can just maybe be vulnerable and let somebody else protect me’.”

He also recalled the time he got married to Mira Rajput during the interview: "When we got married, I thought that I would have to protect her because she is this 20-year-old girl who's just coming from Delhi. And this is a big bad world of movies and glamour and everybody is so judgy. She's a strong person and she is solid. She comes from a very strong family and is very self-assured and extremely intelligent. She is very stubborn and you should be stubborn because that's how you protect yourself."

He opened up about playing Kabir Singh in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s movie. He said, “I am putting myself on a pedestal by judging what you should and should not watch. Who am I to decide that? Who am I to decide that you will be influenced positively or negatively by the character? I cannot do that because then I am putting myself above you.”

Shahid stated that he would not mind if someone watched Kabir Singh and felt they would never want to meet a man like him. According to Shahid, it is his responsibility to try his best to explain the character's nature and the reasons behind his actions.
