Remember the American series Fear Factor? It had a huge following for its weird and adventurous stunts and tasks. Soon, the Indian entertainment industry thought something similar could work for the nation’s audience as well, and we can have a show with celebrities and commoners participating in the reality television series and keep the audience hooked to it. This was the origin of Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi, which was initially showcased on Sony TV as Fear Factor India.

But the show was soon sold to Colors TV and relaunched as Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi and went on air on 21 July 2008. Then on 1 August 2020, Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi – Made in India was launched as a spin-off of the primary series in which several contestants participated. The show is all about celebrities performing mind-blowing stunts within a time limit sometimes. The adrenaline gush and anticipation as to what will happen caught the eyes of people.

Some of the stunts were beyond imagination such as eating gross things even insects and lying around different species of animals, or balancing oneself mid-air or at great heights while being asked to meet a goal. Those who fail a task or are unable to complete the same due to quitting, or lack of performance of the opponent can earn the participants Fear fanda, a cloth piece tied around the hand and taken off only if the contestant can make it through the next qualifying round.

The reality show also has tasks for elimination, and those who get through make it ahead in the competition. To save from elimination, the contestants need to anyhow emerge as the winner of the particular task. The ‘taking you on a trip’ tasks coupled with exotic and foreign locations where the series are filmed adds to the charm and appeal of Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi, and the recall of the American series all contribute to its popularity of it.
