Summary: Vikrant Massey shines in his Netflix film, while Kareena Kapoor Khan revels in her Kate Winslet era.

The Buckingham Murders

Kareena Kapoor Khan is living up to her Kate Winslet days, as the small-town murder mystery has been seeing a bit of a resurgence lately. "Mare of Easttown" and "The Buckingham Murders," however, are not. Many disparate threads are trying to weave together, including the difficulties immigrants face integrating into a foreign society, the anti-LGBTQ sentiment in some conservative areas, local discontent, the increase in drug use, and the economic hardship that is currently reaching an all-time high in the UK. The murder mystery, which is supposed to be the main focus of the movie, ends up being awkwardly tucked away as a result.

A youngster involved in drug distribution dies in an act of fury murder. However, more research quickly reveals several subplots, including the pitfalls of patriarchal and heterosexual familial structures, the complex nature of drug abuse among children, emotional retaliation, and the weaknesses of the state apparatus and justice systems. Nevertheless, between the many humanitarian threads, the suspense one expects from a crime thriller is lost.

The way the conflict between Muslims and Sikhs is presented is also quite clear, with frequent references to "mosques" and "gurdwaras." The same can be said of Jas's contacts with the boss of the police station, who alternated between expressing compassion for her loss and insisting on finishing the task at hand.

Kareena Kapoor Khan is outstanding as a grieving mother who gracefully handles the matter while dealing with her grief daily. The veteran performer gives an exceptionally powerful performance that serves as the film's main focal point. Supporting cast members contribute their few but essential elements to the nearly flawless mixture. 'The Buckingham Murders' is a decent weekend movie to see in theaters, though not mind-blowingly creative.

Sector 36

The gruesome details of the 2005–2006 serial killings in Nithari, an ugly neighborhood in Noida, chilled your blood. After a human hand was accidentally found in a drain, more body parts were found in a water tank and buried in the compound of Maninder Pandher, a businessman. Surinder Koli, the businessman's housekeeper, confessed to raping and killing almost 20 children by sexually abusing them and then dismembering them in his bathroom.

Despite being based on the Nithari killings, "Sector 36" immediately folds down its claim of "authenticity and accuracy" in its disclaimer. Names are modified. Nithari is Seelampur/Shahdara, Pandher is Bassi, and Surinder is Prem. The police officer who came under fire for brushing off the parents' concerns about their missing children is now seen to have changed his opinion and is starting to handle the issue seriously, presumably with the help of his peers.

The film is structured as a game of cat and mouse between Inspector Ram Charan Pandey (Deepak Dobriyal) and the psychotic Prem (Vikrant Massey), and it is successful in evoking disgust and terror in the first half as we witness the creation of a monster. Massey tries to make his character convincing, his sultry smile and creepy banter concealing his true nature—this is not a man you would like to meet on a gloomy night.

Sector 36, produced by Jyoti Deshpande under Jio Studios and Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, stands out as a classic example of difficult and reflective filmmaking. Known for its dedication to producing films of the highest caliber, Maddock Films has once again produced a work of art that is both intelligent and beautifully executed.
