Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) refers to the capture of carbon dioxide (CO₂) from industrial emission sources (such as thermal power plants, cement plants, and steel plants) or the air, followed by purification and compression. This CO₂ can then be used in the production of chemical products (such as urea, methanol, and synthetic fuels), enhanced oil recovery (EOR), or transported via pipelines/ships to deep geological structures (such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs and brackish water layers) for long-term safe storage, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to carbon neutrality goals. The upstream of the industry chain includes high-concentration CO₂ emitting enterprises (power, chemical, and steel industries), suppliers of capture materials such as amine liquids/adsorbents, compressors, pipelines, and monitoring equipment; the midstream consists of core technology and engineering service providers who need to master key technologies such as post-combustion/pre-combustion capture, direct air capture (DAC), CO₂ liquefaction transportation, geological storage assessment, and leak monitoring; and the downstream includes governments (carbon emission reduction credit purchasers), oil fields (EOR demanders), green chemical companies, and voluntary carbon market buyers. Due to the complexity of the technology, the large initial investment (hundreds of millions of yuan), and the strong dependence on policies, the industry as a whole is still in the early stages of commercialization, with significant differences in gross profit margins: EOR projects can achieve a gross profit of 20%–40% because the revenue can cover the costs, while pure storage or DAC projects are mostly in a state of loss or slight profit (gross profit of -10% to 15%), but this is gradually improving as carbon prices rise and subsidies are implemented.The CCUS market is entering a phase of accelerated growth driven by global carbon neutrality targets, tightening emission regulations, and the urgent need for industrial decarbonization.
