Water-based automotive interior and exterior coatings are widely used on instrument panels, door trims, center consoles, air vents, decorative strips and steering-wheel components, as well as bumpers, mirror housings, grilles, wheel covers and exterior trims. They meet stringent requirements on interior odor, VOC, fogging and cabin air quality while also delivering sufficient durability and color performance for exterior parts, making them a key technology pathway for replacing solventborne coatings under automotive lightweighting and environmental regulations.In the value chain, water-based automotive interior and exterior coatings sit in the midstream between “fine chemicals → functional coatings → automotive components → OEM vehicles.” Upstream are suppliers of resins, pigments and additives, as well as specialized equipment and packaging. On the raw-material side, key inputs come from producers of waterborne acrylic, polyurethane, epoxy and hybrid emulsions/dispersions (companies of the BASF, Dow, Covestro, Arkema, Nippon Gohsei type), pigment manufacturers providing titanium dioxide, carbon black, aluminum flakes and pearlescent pigments (e.g., Chemours, Tronox, Venator or Merck–type pearlescent suppliers), and additive makers offering wetting/levelling agents, defoamers, dispersants, matting agents and rheology modifiers (such as Evonik, Clariant, BYK–type companies). Anti-corrosive pigments, deionized water and metal/plastic packaging complete the bill of materials. Midstream coating formulators and manufacturers design and produce primers, basecoats, topcoats, clearcoats and soft-touch coatings tailored to the requirements of OEMs and interior/exterior parts suppliers, handle scale-up, production control and QA, and provide application guidance and on-site technical service. Downstream are Tier-1 interior and exterior parts suppliers (for example, companies similar to Faurecia/Forvia, Magna, Plastic Omnium, Yanfeng and regional players) and vehicle OEMs (such as Volkswagen, Toyota, GM, Ford, Stellantis, BYD, Geely–type manufacturers), which use water-based coatings on injection-molded parts and in their surface preparation and paint lines to meet regulatory and brand requirements for environmental performance, quality and appearance consistency.
