IPL 2024 Points Table: RCB jumps to fifth spot, CSK at third
Summary: After CSK vs. RR and RCB vs. DC, Chennai rises to the third spot and RCB jumps to the fifth spot in the IPL 2024 points table.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) still have hopes of reaching the playoffs after yesterday’s win against Delhi Capital (DC) by 47 runs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Whereas Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are closer to knockouts after defeating Rajasthan Royals for the third time in a row at Chepauk Stadium on Sunday.
Delhi Capitals lost four wickets in the powerplay itself, while Royal Challengers Bangalore jumped ahead after being held to 187/9 batting first. David Warner's comeback was short-lived; Swapnil Singh dismissed him on the fourth ball of the inning.
Yash Dayal then dismissed Abhishek Porel with his first delivery of the match in the second over, and Jake Fraser-McGurk got run out at the non-striker's end after scoring 21 runs off eight deliveries.
Previously, RCB could not make the most of Patidar’s quick fifty, managing only 187 for 9. Patidar (52 of 32) and Will Jacks (41 of 29b) contributed 88 runs off 53 balls for the third wicket, helping RCB overcome the early dismissals of captain Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli.
Chennai won the opening match on Sunday in a low-scoring game thanks to captain Ruturaj Gaikwad's 41-ball 42 not out as his team chased the target. Pacers Simarjeet Singh and Tushar Deshpande split five wickets to keep Rajasthan at 141-5 on a slow pitch. Chennai chased it in 18.2 overs, settling on 145-5, its first victory over the Rajasthan Royals in five games.
RCB, who rose to fifth place in the points table, currently has 12 points from 13 games, the same as the Capitals, who dropped to sixth place. The three-time runner-up needs a win over the Chennai Super Kings in their final season encounter on May 18 in Bengaluru to increase their playoff chances.
The Capitals must also win their last league game against the Lucknow SuperGiants on May 14 to stay in the competition. With their seventh win in 13 games, Chennai moved up to third place in the IPL table with 14 points, level with Sunrisers Hyderabad but ahead in net run rate.
After its third straight loss, Rajasthan remains second with 16 points after 12 games and needs a single win in the last two games to seal its last-four position.
