The Men in Blue's victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 put an end to their 11-year drought for an ICC trophy, and Rahul Dravid's time as Team India's head coach came to an excellent end. Following this incredible accomplishment, the team has announced the next phase of their plan, with BCCI announcing Gautam Gambhir's appointment as the new head coach of the Indian squad.
The contracts of all of his assistants, including bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and batting coach Vikram Rathour, are about to expire, much like that of Rahul Dravid. According to reports, Gambhir wants Mhambrey to be replaced with a former RCB player.
Gautam Gambhir has asked former India and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fast bowler R Vinay Kumar to take over as India's next bowling coach. Currently employed by the Mumbai Indians as a talent scout, Vinay Kumar formerly coached MI Emirates' bowling unit during the ILT20. In the past, he has participated in one Test, 38 ODIs, and nine T20Is for India. He was also a member of the Indian team that took home the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013.
As to the report, Gautam Gambhir has insisted on having Abhishek Nayar, the present assistant coach of KKR, take over as the next batting coach in place of Vikram Rathour. Nayar is also the director of the KKR Academy; therefore, the current IPL winners would suffer a serious hit if this appointment were to go through.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced Gautam Gambhir as the team’s head coach.
"It is with great pleasure that I welcome Mr. Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. Modern-day cricket has developed swiftly, and Gautam has observed this transformation firsthand. After enduring the grind and excelling in numerous roles during his career, I am certain that Gautam is the best individual to lead Indian cricket forward. His clear vision for #TeamIndia, together with his extensive expertise, ideally equips him to take on this exciting and highly sought-after coaching position. The @BCCI fully supports him as he embarks on this new journey," he concluded.
The ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka later this month will be Gautam Gambhir's first task as head coach of Team India. Since his contract expires at the end of 2027, he will lead India in the 2025 Champions Trophy, 2026 T20 World Cup, and 2027 ODI World Cup.
