Summary: India defeated Australia by a historic 295 runs in Perth, headed by captain Jasprit Bumrah.
In the first Test, India defeated Australia by a commanding 295 runs and ended the match with more than a day remaining. On a challenging surface, Jasprit Bumrah led the team from the front, motivating them to get past every hurdle and exceed the hosts.
Day four began with Australia at 12-3, needing a huge 534 to win, but shortly after lunch, they were all out for 238 with Bumrah obtaining 3-42.
Usman Khawaja's and Steve Smith's vital wickets extended to the hosts' agony as Mohammed Siraj ran wild in the initial session. Australia was 104-5 at the half on day four, with Mitchell Marsh on five and a determined Travis Head not out 63 as they attempt to defeat an impossible 534.
The fact that Bumrah got rid of Travis Head (89) with a spectacular delivery changed the situation entirely in India's favor. He was quickly followed in the pavilion by Mitchell Marsh, who was Nitish Kumar Reddy's first Test cricket wicket.
India recorded one of the most famous wins overseas, making history in Perth. With two full days to try and survive, Australia was left at 12-3 and 521 runs after a fantastic batting display and a flawless last 15 minutes at the Optus Stadium.
Japrit Bumhrah on the win: "Yeah, very happy with the beginning, you know; we were put under pressure in the 1st inning, but the way we responded after that, I am proud of the team.
“I told the players to have faith in yourselves and also trust the process because you know over here you have an opportunity to do something special so on the given day if you perform well, you have a chance to do something special.”
Pat Cummins on the win: "Fairly disappointing. The preparation ahead of the game was a good one. We were firing, a fair bit to look at as lots didn't go right. Yeah, it is what it is. After the loss, you need to get back on the horse quickly. We will take a couple of day's rest and then go back to the field in Adelaide.”
