MS Dhoni Secures Trademark for ‘Captain Cool’, the Iconic Nickname Becomes Official

Summary: MS Dhoni secures his legacy by trademarking his nickname "Captain Cool". It officially belongs to him now.

MS Dhoni has now obtained trademark rights of the moniker "Captain Cool," which has been used by fans and the media for years. The application, filed in June 2023, was accepted and published in the Trademarks Journal on June 16, 2025.

The trademark belongs under Class 41, which includes services such as education, sports training, and entertainment. This means Dhoni now has exclusive rights to use the name "Captain Cool" in connection with operations such as coaching, sports academies, and training initiatives.

Interestingly, another company—Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Pvt Ltd—had already applied for the same trademark, but their application is currently being reviewed and marked as "rectification filed." Dhoni's legal team successfully demonstrated that the phrase is synonymous with him due to his calm demeanor and leadership throughout major cricket victories such as the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy.

This practice secures Dhoni's public image while also highlighting the growing trend among sports icons to secure and monetise their own brands, as seen with global sportsmen such as LeBron James and Usain Bolt.

If no one objects within the next 120 days, Dhoni will legally own the term “Captain Cool”, undertaking his legacy not just in cricket but in branding too.
