RCB Victory Parade Turns Tragic: 11 Killed in Bangalore Stampede
Summary: Due to congestion outside the stadium, a stampede during RCB's IPL victory celebration in Bengaluru resulted in over 30 injuries and 11 fatalities.
A huge crowd gathered outside Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium celebrating RCB's victory on June 4, but soon the celebrations turned to tragedy, killing 11 people in the stampede. The chaos that followed the team's IPL championship parade resulted in over 30 injuries.
While the stadium's capacity was 35,000, there were around 1-2 lakh people gathered to watch the celebration, and the tragedy struck. There was a serious lack of security and crowd management, according to witnesses. There was a stampede when the anxious crowd rushed forward when one of the gates was partially opened to inspect tickets.
The casualties were 18-year-old Manoj Kumar, the son of a pani puri vendor, and a 14-year-old student. Families are in mourning as what started as a celebration turned into a tragedy.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah described the occurrence as "deeply saddening" and pledged ₹10 lakh in compensation for each grieving family. A magisterial inquiry has also been launched to investigate the mismanagement.
Criticism is mounting against the event organizers and authorities for underestimating the crowd and failing to ensure proper safety measures. The BCCI and RCB management are under scrutiny for a lack of cooperation with local law enforcement and civic organisations.
This heartbreaking incident overshadowed RCB's remarkable IPL win, leading the city to grieve instead of celebrate.
