The helicopter, a Bell 206 operated by New York Helicopter Tours, had departed from the Wall Street Heliport and was flying over Manhattan when it experienced a catastrophic mechanical failure. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the helicopter break apart mid-air before spiraling into the Hudson River near Pier 40.
Agustín Escobar has led Siemens Spain since 2022 and previously served as the Global CEO of Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility. With more than 25 years of expertise, he has held leadership positions in the United States, South America, Germany, and Spain. His wife, Mercè Camprubí Montal, was the Global Commercialization Director for Siemens Energy.
The National Transportation Safety Board is looking into what caused the collision. Initial indications suggested a mechanical failure of the rotor system.
The tragic incident has prompted condolences from global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
This marks the first fatal helicopter crash in New York City since 2019 and has reignited discussions about the safety of urban sightseeing flights.
