Atul Subhash's wife and in-laws were detained in a suicide case

Summary: Atul Subhash’s wife Nikita Singhania, her mother Nisha Singhania, and brother Anurag Singhania were arrested.

Bengaluru police have detained Atul Subhash's wife, mother, and younger brother five days after the suicide of the 34-year-old Bengaluru techie.

Early on Sunday, all three were taken to Bengaluru, appeared before the magistrate at his home, and were placed under 14 days of judicial imprisonment.

While her mother, Nisha Singhania, and brother, Anurag Singhania, were arrested from Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, Subhash's wife, Nikita Singhania, was detained in Gurugram, Haryana. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Shivakumar of the White Field Division in Bengaluru, all three have been placed under judicial custody.=

On December 9, Atul Subhash, a 34-year-old artificial intelligence engineer, committed suicide in Bengaluru. He left behind a 24-page suicide note, a 90-minute video, and a checklist detailing alleged abuse from his estranged wife and her family.

Subhash's suicide letter accused his wife of suing him for nine cases, including murder, domestic abuse, dowry harassment, and financial exploitation. He also stated that a court asked Rs 5 lakh to "settle" one of the lawsuits. "Justice is due," he wrote on each page of the note.

Atul’s father revealed "He was broken from inside. Though he didn't tell us much, he would say that corruption is everywhere, but he would fight as he was on the path of truth,"

Nikita stated during questioning that she was harassed by her spouse, not the other way around. She stated that she had been avoiding him for nearly three years. She was quoted as saying, "Why would she avoid him if she harassed him for money?" "We will investigate the case thoroughly and file a chargesheet in court if the allegations made by Atul are proved," the police official stated.

Subhash's death stirred up debate about the legal and emotional consequences of divorce and alimony issues. The Supreme Court recently announced a significant decision in a different alimony case, establishing eight considerations for determining equitable maintenance. These include both partners' social and financial position, individual incomes, and lifestyle during marriage.
