Landslide in Raigad, Maharashtra: Five People Dead, CM Eknath Shinde Promises Relief of Rs. 5 Lakh to the Deceased’s Family
Five people are killed in a landslide in Raigad, Maharashtra, and many more are reportedly trapped. The rescue effort is in progress. An NDRF rescue effort is underway following a landslide in the village of Irshalwadi in the Khalapur tehsil of the Raigad district. Four persons have been killed and three others have been injured, according to the Raigad police. On Wednesday night, about 11 p.m., the landslide happened. Devendra Fadnavis, the deputy chief minister, provided an update on the situation, saying that 75 persons had been rescued from the rubble in the village of Irshalwadi in the Khalapur tehsil of the Raigad district, and five bodies had so far been found.
Eknath Shinde, the chief minister of Maharashtra, also traveled to the landslide site to assess the situation. According to the CMO statement, each family of the deceased would receive Rs. 5 lakh, and the government will pay for the injured people's medical care. At the emergency control room in Mumbai, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Ajit Pawar is also in charge of organizing the rescue and relief efforts. The NDRF had earlier reported that two teams had arrived at the scene and had started the search and rescue effort. They added that two more teams have left for the operation from Mumbai.
The village is situated next to the Irshalgad stronghold, which is halfway between Matheran and Panvel. The stronghold is Prabalgad's sister fort. The tribal community of Irshalwadi is not reachable by pucca road. The closest settlement is Chowk Village on the Mumbai-Pune Highway. Trekker organizations have been asked to assist with search and rescue efforts by the district authorities. The landslide in Malin Village in Ambegaon Tehsil of Pune District on July 30, 2014, is the largest landslide to have occurred in Maharashtra.
Nearly the entire tribal settlement, which consisted of 50 families, had been destroyed by that enormous landslide. When the rescue effort was put to an end, the total death toll was 153. The only thing that's left of the former village is its school. IMD had yesterday issued a "Red" alert for the state's Palghar and Raigad districts. Raigad has received an orange alert for severe to very heavy rainfall today. The districts' schools will likewise be closed today.
