Mumbai to Navi Mumbai Airport in Just 40 Minutes: Electric Water Taxis Coming Soon

Summary: New electric water taxis will soon connect the Gateway of India to Navi Mumbai Airport, cutting travel time to just 40 minutes.

Folks, now the route to Navi Mumbai Airport from South Mumbai is about to get a lot quicker — and smoother. The Maharashtra government is launching a new electric water taxi service that will connect the Gateway of India to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, slashing travel time to just 40 minutes.

The water taxis will set sail from the Radio Club Jetty near the Gateway of India and head straight across the harbour. Compared to the current 60–75 minutes by road through the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, this is a game-changer for daily commuters and flyers alike.

The service is expected to launch shortly after the monsoon season. Initially, two boats with seating for 30 passengers each will begin operations. In total, 15 electric boats will eventually be deployed on routes including Gateway–Elephanta Caves–Alibaug.

These boats, designed by Swedish company Candela, run on hydrofoil technology — meaning they glide above the water surface, reducing resistance and energy use while cruising at speeds between 18 to 30 knots.

To help boost the water transport revolution between the Radio Club and the Gateway of India, a marina project costing Rs 190 crore is underway. The waterfront connectivity will rise significantly once it's completed, and will cater to around 2.5 lakh passengers each year.

This marks an important move for sustainable transport in Mumbai, offering a cleaner, quicker, and more picturesque option for traveling along the city's coastal paths.
