Narender Mann Appointed As Special Public Prosecutor for 26/11 Accused Tahawwur Rana

Summary: The Home Affairs Ministry nominated attorney Narender Mann as the special public prosecutor for the 26/11 Mumbai attacks suspect, Tahawwur Rana

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a gazette notification appointing advocate Narender Mann as the special public prosecutor for the trial of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, an accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. This appointment is for a period of three years or until the completion of the trial, whichever comes first.

According to the notification, Mann will conduct the trial and related matters on behalf of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) before the NIA Special Courts in Delhi and the appellate courts. As Rana is being extradited from the United States to India to face prosecution for his claimed involvement in the 2008 attacks, this development occurs.

A team of senior NIA and intelligence officers has taken custody of Rana, who will soon arrive in Delhi. Upon arrival, he is likely to be placed under judicial custody and taken before the court via video link.

Rana, a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, is accused of conspiring with David Coleman Headley and members of terrorist organizations Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami in planning and executing the Mumbai terror attacks. The NIA registered a charge against him in 2009 under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the SAARC Convention (Suppression of Terrorism) Act.

Rana's extradition has been praised by Union Home Minister Amit Shah as a major victory for the Indian government, highlighting the government's resolve to hold those responsible for attacks on India's sovereignty accountable.
