An unexpected name has recently been proposed by former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir as a substitute option for Hardik Pandya in the forthcoming Asia Cup, despite vociferous opposition from an ex-chief selector.

The outspoken Gambhir thinks that young all-rounder Shivam Dube ought to be a substitution for Hardik Pandya in the Indian team for the Asia Cup. He contends that Dube's versatility, particularly in the limited-overs style, makes him an invaluable asset. Gambhir claims that Dube has the ability to step into Pandya's shoes if necessary based on his previous efforts in domestic and international cricket.

However, former head selector MSK Prasad, who handled the selection of the Indian team till his position ended in 2020, has not endorsed his notion. While Dube is a brilliant player, according to Prasad, the team management should favour more seasoned players for such important competitions.

He thinks that experienced athletes who have dealt with pressure in the past will be better able to face the rigours of international competition, particularly in the high-stakes Asia Cup.

Discussions about Hardik Pandya's backup player are still going on in Indian cricket circles. The panel of judges will need to balance the benefits and drawbacks of Gambhir's unorthodox pick against Prasad's penchant for experience as the Asia Cup draws near. It will be interesting to watch whatever direction the selectors choose as they work to put together a strong Indian team for the coveted competition.
