BRICS Summit 2024: PM Narendra Modi in Talks with Putin, First Bilateral Meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Summary: Days after the border breakthrough, PM and Xi's bilateral meeting at BRICS.
PM Modi concluded the first day of the summit with bilateral meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He affirmed India's commitment to offering "all possible assistance" to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict alongside Mr. Putin.
Putin emphasized the importance of expanding financial cooperation among member states during the BRICS meeting. He added that there will be talks about a range of global issues, including regional disputes and expanding the BRICS organization.
PM Modi talked about coming together and tackling terrorism and advocated for a ‘people’s centric’ approach to dealing with disinformation, cyber security, and deepfake.
Shortly after China announced it had "reached a solution" and would "work with India" to "effectively implement" the plan, without referencing the agreement on patrolling along the Line of Actual Control.
India announced on Tuesday that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi planned a bilateral meeting on Wednesday at the BRICS Summit in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan in Russia.
The announcement was made by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri the day after India and China agreed on patrolling their military and at the LAC (line of actual control) in eastern Ladakh.
The two will be meeting after five years for their bilateral meeting at the BRICS. Last they met in October 2019, months before the Chinese invasion in eastern Ladakh, which led to a military conflict along the Line of Control.
While they held pull-aside discussions in Johannesburg in 2023 and Bali in 2022, Wednesday's summit will be the first official, scheduled bilateral meeting.
“I can confirm that there will be a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping tomorrow on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit.” said the Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, briefing the media in Kazan.
