Trump Hints at Major Trade Deal with India After China Pact

Summary: Following the conclusion of a deal with China, former US President Donald Trump hinted at a "very big" trade pact with India

Donald Trump, speaking at a public event on June 26, hinted that the United States may soon secure a big trade pact with India, right after signing a deal with Beijing. He suggested a possible India deal "very big" and implied that talks to increase economic access between the two countries are already underway.

Trump emphasized that such agreements are not for everyone, signaling that only select countries—like India—will be part of the U.S.'s deeper trade strategy. This comment comes at a time when both countries are working to enhance economic ties and expand bilateral trade, which they previously aimed to double by 2030.

On India's side, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized that talks are ongoing and a key priority. U.S. officials, particularly Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, voiced optimism, stating that the agreement was "not too far off."

But there are still some concerns to look over. Major industries like steel, auto parts, agriculture, and many non-tariff obstacles are still under dispute. However, before the July 9 deadline, it appears that both sides are hoping for an "early harvest" trade agreement.

India has already expressed a desire to reduce tariffs on a number of American goods, including whiskey, motorcycles, and almonds. This might pave the way for a future free trade agreement that is more extensive if talks proceed smoothly.

Trump's words signal that US-India trade relations are gaining steam, but the outcome will be determined by how both parties resolve current sticking points in the coming weeks.
