UN Security Council Presses Pakistan on Pahalgam Terror Attack
Summary: The UN Security Council questioned Pakistan over the involvement of Lashkar-e-Taiba in the Pahalgam attack and demanded responsibility.
In a confidential meeting, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) questioned Pakistan's role in the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Twenty-five tourists and a local pony ride operator were killed in the attack. UNSC members were worried by the possible involvement of the Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba in the planning of the attack.
During the hour-long discussion, UNSC members criticised the targeting of civilians and urged the need for accountability. Also, it was claimed that tensions in the region have increased largely because of Pakistan's recent nuclear threats and missile tests.
Pakistan was criticised for trying to internationalise the matter by requesting a UNSC meeting. The council members urged Pakistan to resolve its problems with India on a bilateral basis and rejected claims that the attack was a false flag operation.
After the meeting, Pakistani envoy Asim Iftikhar denounced India's suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty as a violation of international law and denied any role in the Pahalgam incident. Neither the Indian government nor the UNSC has issued any formal announcements about the talks.
The UNSC's resolute position emphasises the complexity of the India-Pakistan relationship in the face of persistent security concerns and the call for responsibility from the international community.
